Theres nothing nastier to walk through than shoulder-high wet bracken. He had formed the unusual opinion that the job of a king is to make the kingdom a better place for everyone to live in. Verence was a great believer in the usefulness of knowledge derived from books. No one had ever told him how to be a king, so he had to find out for himself. In the beginning, there was nothing, which exploded. The current state of knowledge can be summarized thus: Much human ingenuity has gone into finding the ultimate Before. The point is, theres always something before. The play, the game, the war is just a little window on a ribbon of events that may extend back thousands of years.
